ABOUT THE ARTIST
Hi there. My name is Moira Christie. I am a local ceramic artist and small business owner located in the small coastal community of South Durras NSW Australia.
I have always been fascinated and amazed by the characteristics of clay. How it connects to the earth in which it was sourced and how the variety and diversity of each clay type are reflected in its colour, feel and tactile textures. While the art of ceramics focuses mainly on the malleable capacity of clay to be sculpted and made into functional pieces, a large aspect of my personal practice involves honouring and respecting the personality and the natural tendency of the clay. This involves working with the clay, not against it, in order to produce work that is not solely controlled by my aspirations but also partly dictated by the personality of the clay. Sometimes the clay decides the final shape.
My passion for pottery began during my school days and I then sought to expand upon my skills through a TAFE ceramic studio and surface study. Since then I have experimented with unusual techniques and drawn inspiration from my environment and natural surroundings to build upon and establish my current creative practice. Focusing on creating individual distinct pieces.
CREATIONS
I get my inspiration from nature and the patterns I see around me. Living with the bush on one side and the sea on the other has enhanced my passion to create designs that reflect these impressions of nature. All my work is individually handcrafted in small batches and kiln fired at my home.

Describe your image
My daily ocean swims are one of my favourite things about living on the South Coast. This design came about because, as I regularly viewed the bottom of the sea. I have began to notice how the undulating movement of tidal water and diffused light has influenced the naturally occurring patterns and designs.
PINCH BOWL DESIGNS

Created through a laborious process of patiently pinching clay between finger and thumb, each individual pot or bowl is completely unique and a one-off item that you will be able to treasure for years to come.
Additionally, some of the pots contain a burnished exterior, formed by an age-old smoothing process used for centuries to seal and smooth over a piece of pottery.
VINTAGE MATERIAL IMPRESSIONS

Vintage material patterns are used to impress and create the design onto the clay. Each piece is individually painted in colours to enhance the design which can have a coastal spirit on the design.
